Installing the WordPress Plugin

Updated Dec 15, 2025

Add HelpLane live chat to your WordPress site with automatic user identification.

What the WordPress Plugin Does

  • Adds the HelpLane chat widget to all pages on your WordPress site
  • Automatically identifies logged-in WordPress users (name, email, user ID)
  • Optionally passes WooCommerce customer data (order count, lifetime value)
  • Requires no coding - configure everything from WordPress admin

Installing the Plugin

From WordPress Plugin Directory

  • Go to Plugins > Add New in your WordPress admin
  • Search for HelpLane Chat
  • Click Install Now
  • Click Activate

Manual Installation

  • Download the plugin ZIP file
  • Go to Plugins > Add New > Upload Plugin
  • Choose the ZIP file and click Install Now
  • Click Activate

Configuring the Plugin

  • Go to Settings > HelpLane Chat in WordPress admin
  • Enter your Brand Token
  • Configure the options:
  • Enable Widget: Show/hide the chat widget on your site
  • Identify Logged-in Users: Pass user name, email, and ID to HelpLane
  • Include WooCommerce Data: Pass order count and lifetime value (requires WooCommerce)
  • Click Save Settings

Getting Your Brand Token

  • Log in to your HelpLane dashboard
  • Go to Settings (gear icon)
  • Select Chat Widget
  • Copy your Brand Token from the Install Widget section

How User Identification Works

When a logged-in WordPress user visits your site:

  • The plugin detects they're logged in
  • Their WordPress user ID (prefixed with wp_), name, and email are passed to the widget
  • In HelpLane, you'll see their identity in conversations

This means returning users are automatically recognized - no need for them to enter their details again.

WooCommerce Integration

If WooCommerce is active on your site and the option is enabled:

  • Customer order count is passed to HelpLane
  • Customer lifetime value (total spent) is included
  • Currency is automatically detected

This data appears in the conversation sidebar, helping your support team provide better service.

Troubleshooting

Widget not appearing

  • Verify the plugin is activated in Plugins
  • Check that Enable Widget is checked in Settings > HelpLane Chat
  • Confirm your Brand Token is entered correctly
  • Clear any caching plugins and CDN cache

Users not being identified

  • Ensure Identify Logged-in Users is enabled
  • The user must be logged in to WordPress
  • Check that you're not in WordPress admin (widget only shows on frontend)

WooCommerce data not showing

  • Verify WooCommerce is installed and active
  • Ensure Include WooCommerce Data is enabled
  • The customer must have placed at least one order
